Year 3 English for OC

This course is tailored to prepare students for the OC Placement Test. Students will engage in a comprehensive exploration of texts, emphasising reading comprehension, critical thinking, and effective communication. The lessons integrate a range of literary genres to provide a dynamic and enriching learning experience. 

Course objectives

• Apply advanced reading comprehension strategies to interpret and analyse diverse texts independently.
• Develop critical thinking skills through literary analysis, inference, and interpretation of texts.

Teaching Plan
Vocabulary is included in most weeks. Homework tasks are self-marked. There is no homework in week 10.

Week 1: Main idea summary, sentence gap match

Week 2: Direct and indirect characterisation, inferring character, narrative comprehension

Week 3: Understanding poetic techniques and devices, sensory imagery, poetry comprehension

Week 4: Understanding meaning through context clues, linked extracts

Week 5: Mock test & review, paired texts comprehension

Week 6: Structures for organising texts, sentence gap match

Week 7: Inferring meaning, reading comprehension

Week 8: Revision of poetic techniques and devices, poetry comprehension

Week 9: Practice test & review, poetry comprehension and analysis

Week 10: Assessment & review, word games, narrative comprehension, sentence gap match
